Riddle, riddle …
I travel the world, and I am drunk constantly.
Who am I?
We all take it for granted but water is so essential to our well-being. Water can be found everywhere, and is all around us and in us. Approximately 70% of the earth’s surface is composed of water; 70% of the human body is composed of water too. It may surprise you just how much of our tissues are made up of water: up to 80% of brain tissue, approximately 79% of blood, and even teeth contain up to 10% water!
Averagely, a person could live for close to a month without food, but you would not last more than a week without water. The average adult needs to drink about 2.5 liters of water per day to function optimally.
When it comes to the body’s internal processes, water is important for flushing out toxins from the body and keeping the kidneys humming perfectly. Good hydration can help reduce tooth decay and cavities, keeping your smile beautiful. Staying hydrated also leads to healthier skin tone. Did you also know that by the time you feel thirsty your body has already lost more than 1% of its total water. You are already dehydrated by the time you feel thirsty!
In terms of water’s use outside the body, we all know that water helps us clean ourselves. But, did you know that water is also used as therapy? Hydrotherapy or aquatic therapy is a type of therapy where water is used as a means to help people gain back function of their limbs, or to cause relief from pain. Water pressure at different levels is also used as a massage technique in many spas and beauty parlors around the world. We also use water to transfer heat or cold to the body – just cast your mind back to the last fever you had, and the cool, wet towel that was placed on your forehead … how did that feel?
Some people even find looking at water or water bodies clean and calming. This is why beach houses are a big phenomenon in real estate. Other people also like to listen to dripping or flowing sounds of water, or rain. It helps keep them calm or helps them to fall asleep.
It is important to drink enough water throughout the day so that you don’t get to the point where you are feeling very thirsty. That’s another reason to take a break from reading, to drink a glass of water now.
But before you go … did you know that the planet earth has the same amount of water now as there was when the planet was formed? That glass of water you are going to drink may contain the same molecules Einstein drank in his first cup of tea.
